CHICAGO, IL: State of Illinois Makes Electronics Recycling Mandatory

Electronics Recycling Becomes Mandatory


Beginning January 1, 2012 the listed electronics have been banned from landfills in the State of Illinois.  These items may no longer be disposed of with your weekly trash.  They must be recycled.

  • televisions, monitors
  • printers, facsimile machines, scanners
  • computers, electronic keyboards and mice
  • video game consoles & videocassette recorders
  • digital converter boxes, cable & satellite      receivers/recorders
  • portable digital music players
  • video disc recorders and players

Following is a list of stores that will accept electronics for recycling.  Some of the stores accept the items for free, some charge a nominal fee.

Deadline December 2011 for Tax Credit for Energy-Efficient Home Upgrades

The tax credit for energy efficient upgrades expires this month, December 31, 2011. If you plan on installing any of these items, purchase must be made before the deadline date to ensure the tax credit…

Five basic energy efficiency upgrades are among the six items that are eligible for the tax credit:

  • Insulation
  • Windows, doors and skylights
  • Non-solar water heaters
  • Metal and asphalt roofs
  • HVAC systems
  • Biomass stoves

Check out this easy chart to see the value of each item’s tax credit, and which installed upgrades qualify under the eligibility criteria:

Improvement Value of Credit Eligibility Criteria
Insulation or insulating material 10% of cost Meets the criteria required by the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code
Exterior window or skylight 10% of cost, up to $200 Meets ENERGY STAR requirements
Exterior door 10% of cost Meets ENERGY STAR requirements
Metal roof with pigmented coating, or asphalt roof with cooling granules 10% of cost Meets ENERGY STAR requirements
Advanced main air circulating fan $50 Electricity use of no more than 2% of total energy used by the furnace
Natural gas, propane, or oil furnace, or hot water boiler $150 Annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) rate not less than 95
Electric heat pump water heater $300 Energy factor of at least 2.0
Electric heat pump $300 Meets the highest efficiency tier set by the Consortium for Energy Efficiency for 2009: SEER of at least 15, an EER of at least 12.5, and an HSPF of at least 8.5
Central air conditioner $300 Meets the highest efficiency tier set by the Consortium for Energy Efficiency for 2009: SEER of at least 16 and an EER of at least 13 for most air conditioners
Natural gas, propane or oil water heater $300 Energy factor of at least .82 or a thermal efficiency rating of at least 90%
Biomass stove $300

La Grange & La Grange Park Residents can now attend a “FREE” Seminar to appeal their taxes this month…

Property Tax Appeal Seminars

The Cook County Board of Review will conduct three seminars for Lyons Township residents to appeal their 2011 property tax assessments.

The hour-long sessions have been scheduled as follows:

• December 13, 2011 — Justice Village Hall, 7800 S. Archer, Justice, IL 60458 at 7:00 p.m.

• December 15, 2011 — Countryside Village Hall, 5550 East Avenue, Countryside, IL 60525 at 7:00 p.m.

• December 19, 2011 — Community Center, 8156 Archer, Willow Springs, IL 60480 at 7:00 p.m.

Taxpayers are asked to bring a copy of their most recent tax bill.

The seminars are free to the public and there is no fee to appeal at the Board of Review.

Local area suburban residents are welcome!

Appeal forms also may be picked up at the Board of Review located at 118 N. Clark Street, Room 601 in Chicago or at the Bridgeview Courthouse located at 10200 South 76th Avenue, Room 237.

Taxpayers may also file an appeal online by visiting Cook County Board of Review

For more information, residents can also call the Cook County Board of Review at 312-603-3644.
